Climate Catastrophe: Fact or Fiction?  –

Climate change is an issue that is hotly debated. And it’s important. Many young people suffer ‘climate anxiety’, believing that the future is dire. If the climate is headed for a catastrophic situation, we need a response to combat it.
Canberra Declaration does not have an official position on climate change. We encourage Christians to respond to this issue, as in all areas of their lives, in worship of God and love of their neighbour.
To help you do that, the Daily Declaration Christian News site has recently published two articles side by side.

Against a Climate CatastropheIn one article titled “Ten Reasons to Question Climate Alarmism“, authors Kurt Mahlburg and Warwick Marsh present the case that there is no climate emergency. Watch as Warwick gives ten reasons to question climate alarmism below. In their article, Kurt and Warwick tackle the idea, promoted by many such as U.S. Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, that “The world is going to end in 12 years if we don’t address climate change.”

They cite the many failed predictions about a climate apocalypse as one reason to doubt the latest claims that our planet will shortly cross the point of no return into a bleak future.
The article also questions the idea that there is a consensus around the issue of climate change. As one example, the Global Warming Petition Project has been signed by over 31,000 American scientists — including 9,000 with PhDs — who reject climate alarmism.

Perhaps of greatest importance, the article raises the question of whether modern climate change catastrophists are motivated by an anti-Christian worldview. They write, “At best, it is increasingly difficult to separate climate alarmism from neo-Marxism. At worst, far from being motivated by Christian concerns for the environment, today’s climate alarmism springs from an ideology deeply hostile to Christianity.”

For a Climate CatastropheThe second article, ” –

Katharine Hayhoe: A Leading Climate Change Christian Scientist“, interviews Professor Hayhoe and her husband, who is a pastor in Texas.
Holding an academic post at Texas Tech University, Hayhoe is convinced by the data that climate change is real – and it is serious. The author of many papers and books, some have said that she’s the best communicator about climate change in the world.

She argues that extreme weather events have intensified and become more frequent – and this is driven by a warmer planet. As these extreme weather events destroy livelihoods and threaten human lives, climate change is not ultimately about saving the planet. It is about saving us.
As a result, she puts forth a call to act on climate change with this question: “What is climate change other than a failure to love? Because these disasters affect us. They affect the food we eat.”

Watch Professor Hayhoe give a presentation on climate change in the video belowHer lecture ends with a call not to have a spirit of fear about the future, but a hope-filled attitude which leads to positive action instead.Canberra Declaration is unashamedly pro-freedom, family, faith and life. These are our core issues. Climate change falls outside of that range.

However, when climate activists such as David Attenborough describe humans as a “plague on the earth”, we will speak against such an anti-life and anti-Christian position.
We are also concerned about some of the results of climate alarmism such as fear and anxiety about the future, a reluctance to have children, and the anti-Western civilisation message some proponents promote. These do intersect with our core values and make it vitally important that there is a place for a proper Christian response with a commitment to free speech. The Daily Declaration Christian News site is such a place.

Ultimately, God is in control of the planet (Gen 8:22) and is on his way to the time when “the kingdom of this world” becomes “the kingdom of our Lord, and of His Christ”. At this time, the earth will return to its pristine Edenic condition and the curse on creation will be broken (Isa 11:6–9Rev 22:3).
Until then, people have a responsibility to care for the environment (Gen 1:26–272:15) so that it nourishes and sustains the human race to the best of our ability, and for the glory of God.
