Think about the things of heaven, not the things of the earth. Colossians 3:2

The story behind the song “Tell Your Heart to Beat Again” by Danny Gokey demonstrates a vital Christian truth for us. The story goes like this: a pastor convinced a heart surgeon in his congregation to let him watch an open heart surgery. The pastor watched them roll the sleeping woman into the operating room and watched as the surgeon cut her chest open and pulled her heart up to work on it. Once the surgeon was finished he put the heart back in its place and massaged it a little to cause it to start beating again. Nothing happened. He tried it again. Again, the heart sat still. The doctor took more drastic measures and the heart still did not beat on its own.

Danny Gokey tells the rest of the story, “Finally the surgeon knelt down beside his patient and he took off his surgeon mask and said “Mrs. Johnson, this is your surgeon. The operation went perfectly, your heart has been repaired, now tell your heart to beat again.” And it did!

Mrs. Johnson had to agree with the truth, that her heart had been changed and was now repaired. It’s the same for us. We have to agree with the beautiful truths of God’s word–everything He says about us, and we will live a joyful, peaceful, beautiful life in Him regardless of our circumstances.

“You will know the truth and the truth will set you free” (John 8:32).

Listen to what your mind is saying all day. Is it what the Bible says? Is it truth? Is it lovely, pure, and right? Do you hear uplifting, victorious, Christ inspired dialogue? Or do you hear struggle, defeat, insecurity, resentment, anger? Do you hear a deserving, lacking mentality? Instead of passively just listening to the tapes that repeat in your mind, begin to talk to yourself. Begin to speak truth. The truth will set you free. Take one verse with you today and tell your heart to beat again!

“Do not copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect” (Romans 12:2).

Prayer

Father, Jesus, Holy Spirit, You and Your words are truth. Each day make me aware of the lies that I believe which keep me in some kind of bondage, apart from You. Guide me, teach me, Lord. I give my mind, will and emotions to You today and choose to submit to Your freeing truth.

Application

Identify one lie which influences the way you live. Ask God for a scripture with which to saturate your mind and overcome the lie. Pray through that scripture each day for two weeks.
